To keep my attention completely focused on a movie, it better be good. I have what some may call if-there-are-no-popcorn-or-snacks-and-the-movie-is-even-in-the-slightest-lame-off-it-goes syndrome. But, there are a few exceptions. If the movie features hottie Matthew McConaughey-hey, I’m all for it because quite frankly if the movie is a shame then at least I have my number one celebrity man crush to feast my eyes on.
Now considering I realize that Mr. McConaughey is a freakin’ genius when it comes to playing a cocky womanizing hunk in romantic comedies, I expected no less in the cleverly titled “Ghost of Girlfriends Past”.
The synopsis according to Warner Brothers goes like this:
“Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” stars Matthew McConaughey as perpetual bachelor Connor Mead. On the eve of his brother Paul’s wedding, Connor’s mockery of romance proves a real buzz-kill for Paul and the wedding party, including Connor’s childhood friend Jenny Perroti (Jennifer Garner), the one woman who has always seemed immune to his considerable charm. Just when it looks like he may single-handedly ruin the celebration, Connor is visited by the ghosts of his jilted girlfriends, who take him on a revealing and hilarious odyssey through his failed relationships. Together they attempt to find out what turned him into such a player and whether he has a second chance to find—and this time keep—the love of his life.
Now granted while it seems like a cute plot, it is a little slow going and the whole spin off of “A Christmas Carol” is kind of corny. How so, you ask? Well like Jacob Marley in “Carol”, Conner (McConaughey-hey) predicts the visit of three ghosts, and Connor’s childhood friend Jenny (Jennifer Garner) ties into all three glimpses of the past, the present and the possible future.
As boring as it appeared to me, I did appreciate McConaughey-hey’s pearly white smile and his adoringly sexy eyes. Perhaps Kate Hudson would have been a better choice for Matthew’s co-star? Ever since Jennifer Garner’s “13 Going On 30″, I’ve been a tad creeped out by her acting abilities.
In closing, I give this film a big fat C-. This is indeed a chick flick and if there had been any other man in this role I would not have given it that. A few words to describe this flick? Predictable, slightly amusing and honestly? It could have been better.
Now granted I am just a critic, you be the judge for yourself. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is on Blu-ray, DVD, On Demand & Digital Download September 22.
