Well you knew it was going to happen. Twilight’s New Moon was going to open and teeny boppers and vampire lovers around the country were going to invade the theaters with their Team Edward vs. Team Jacob obsessions.

And then came out in droves…so much so that they beat out Heath Ledger’s The Dark Knight, who previously held the record for having the best opening day in film history. Hello, new box office record!

According to box office totals released on Saturday, Twilight raked in $72.7 million on its Friday opening day — earning $26.3 million in revenue from midnight runs alone. Now THAT is pretty damn impressive.

Heath Ledger’s The Dark Knight earned $67.2 million from 4,366 runs on July 18, 2008 and finished its three-day opening weekend at $158.4 million.

Check out the top ten movies of the weekend of November 20th and their earnings below.

1. The Twilight Saga: New Moon – $140,700,000
