Big fat congratulations to Ashton Kutcher. Oh, and Twitter. Remember when Kutcher was racing CNN to be the first to get one million Twitter followers? Um, how could you NOT remember that intense competition?!
As part of the deal, Kutcher pledged 10,000 malaria nets for Malaria No More if he reached one million first. And well Mr. Kutcher won. The reward? Making a huge difference in the lives of those affected by malaria.
89,724 malaria nets will be distributed in total to those suffering from malaria, thanks to Ashton and Twitter. HOLLA! It was a fabulous campaign that went viral on Twitter on World Malaria Day 2009 resulting in the most retweeted message on that day. “Every 30 seconds a child dies from Malaria. Nets save lives. Support World Malaria Day = www.MalariaNoMore.org.”
According to Mashable, “The nets will be distributed in the Senagalese towns of Seraya and Vélingara; each person at risk for malaria will get a net to protect him or her from the mosquitoes that carry the disease.” How effing sweet is that?!
About the campaign, Kutcher said at the People’s Choice Awards, “The true reward of the race to a million followers on Twitter are the 90,000 people in Senegal who will sleep underneath bed nets because of the money we all raised through the race.”
Big fat thanks to other Twitter celebrities: Anderson Cooper, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Ryan Seacrest and Oprah. They used their Twitter accounts to spread the word about the Malaria No More Campaign.
Gotta love celebrities using their stardom for good! Go Ashton!
