Just when you thought it was safe to go back to look at your 1980′s toys and board games, Hollywood has done it again. After Transformers and G.I. Joe, you knew it was only a matter of time before a Battleship movie. Opening May 18, 2012, Universal Studios in association with Hasbro (that just sounds weird) will try to sink a battleship and not sink at the box office.
Liam Neeson (Taken) will play Admiral Shane in Battleship. His casting was announced today and he is just the latest to enlist. Neeson will star alongside Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights), will play Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones who is Shane’s future son-in-law. Do you feel the family tension yet? The cast also includes tennis star Andy Roddick‘s wife Brooklyn Decker as Shane’s daughter, Sam; Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood) as Hopper’s older brother, Commanding Officer Stone of the USS Samson (still with me?); and Rihanna as Lt. Raikes, Hopper’s crew mate and a weapons specialist. Insert your own gun tattoo joke.
Directed by Peter Berg (Hancock), Battleship is being described as an action adventure about the planet battling a colossal force. A fleet of ships are forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals. The screenplay is currently getting the script doctor treatment, but here’s hoping we hear “You sunk my battleship!”
