Being gay is the new black? According to Isaac Mizrahi, being gay is more chic than ever and actually helps you in most professions. (Attention recruiters!) The designer extraordinaire came together with other big names like Amanda Hearst, Kat De Luna, and Ann Shoket, editor and chief of Seventeen magazine, to encourage a stop to bullying and ridicule. Stories of personal experiences from fashion’s elites, celebrities, and media poured out of people’s souls when they were asked to give their message of hope. Over 50 videos were filmed over the course of two days at the Derek Fabulous It Gets Better Lounge, hosted by our fave style guru to the stars, Mr. Derek Warburton.
Listen to Derek’s story of hope below.
The It Gets Better Project was created to show young LGBT people the levels of happiness, potential, and positivity their lives will reach -if they can just get through their teen years. Many young people face daily tormenting and bullying, leading them to feel like they have nowhere to turn. It Gets Better Project wants to remind teenagers in the LGBT community that they are not alone -and it WILL get better. The project has turned into a worldwide movement, inspiring thousands of user-created videos and over 25 million views.
To date, the project has received submissions from celebrities, organizations, activists, politicians and media personalities, including President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Adam Lambert, Anne Hathaway, Colin Farrell, Matthew Morrison of “Glee”, Joe Jonas, Joel Madden, Ke$ha, Sarah Silverman, Tim Gunn, Ellen DeGeneres, Michael Kors, and many more.
You can view all of the touching video messages on YouTube and visit itgetsbetter.org to take the pledge to speak up against hate and intolerance.
