Exclusive Interview: Olga Kay

Watch any one of Olga Kay‘s videos on YouTube and I dare you not to laugh. It’s impossible- not happenin’ folks. IMPOSSIBLE. For realz. Her hilarity is due, at least in part, to the all too important combination of comedic timing and a spectacular sense of humor. And both make total sense when you realize that she started out in the Russian circus and first came to Los Angeles as a union juggler.

Now? Well, now she’s moved on and is known as the witty host of the wildly popular, “The Olga Kay Show“, where she puts that comedic timing and her acting skills to use on the show. She also just happens to write and produce the breakout series, that boasts over 400,000 subscribers and millions of views a month.

I had the chance to chat with Olga about her show, as well as her recent collaboration with RogueTV. Check it out after the jump!

Stella: How did your collaboration with RogueTV come about?

Olga: RogueTV was looking into a social media aspect of marketing for their films, so they reached out to a few YouTube personalities, including myself, back in the summer of 2010. At first I was part of their film campaigns (for Skyline, Limitless, The Raven). In the beginning of 2011 they created Tube Top, an online show featuring top YouTube videos from the week from the YouTube stars. One day I got a phone call asking whether or not I would like to host the show live for a few episodes and I said, “YES, let me rest from my Florida trip and I’m all yours!” I was in Florida for Playlist-LIVE (an event which involved a lot of youtubers and fans filming each other 24/7).

Stella: You’ve signed up for 5 episodes for Tube Top, would you do more?

Olga: The original idea was to rotate hosts every once in a while, but I would LOVE to do another 5 if it’s offered to me.

Stella: What, if any, other collaborations do you have planned?

Olga: I’ve recently appeared in an “Annoying Orange” episode in a guest spot playing a lettuce- hahhaha.

I’ve teamed up with Tweak Footwear to create my own shoes, called “Mooshoos” with all the custom ideas submitted by my fans who I call “Mooshers.”

I also made an appearance in Disney’s ‘Take 180′ prequel to the movie “Prom” called “Corey and Lucas FTW.”

Stella: Since Rebecca Black is all over the place these days, and mentioned on Tube Top, I have to ask- what’s your take on her?

Olga: She is a lucky, lucky girl. It’s always interesting to see what happens to viral video stars. Will they be able to repeat their success with the next video that will be released? I’m excited to see how well her next music video will be. I believe it’s called “LOL”.

Stella: Well, your videos are hilarious, what’s your inspiration?

Olga: My inspiration is anything that is happening around me. My friends tell me a story and I see a visual for a great sketch. I see people arguing on the street about nothing and I get inspired to make a fun video. A lot of times I draw from my own life; I would often drive and think ‘what’s bothering me at the moment and how can I make it funny and release it to the world?’ and other times it’s just my imagination, which can be wild at times!
