SPECIAL FEATURE: Jewelry Of the Stars

As we saunter into wedding season, it’s not atypical for people to begin making those kinds of marital arrangements that lend themselves so naturally to the cool fragrant breezes of spring. If you find yourself thinking about the stone, you’re not alone. In fact, diamond engagement rings seem embedded into our subconscious, engraved there with the jewelry of the stars.

Speaking of stars, here’s a list of the top celebrity engagement rings in recent years:

*Kate Middleton was given an 18-carat sapphire diamond ring by Prince William. It’s the same ring that once belonged to Princess Diana. Sapphires, which are sometimes used to substitute for diamonds, can be found in a multitude of colors. A rare variety of sapphire displays different colors under different lighting conditions.

*Megan Fox got a 3-carat, radiant-cut ring worth $80,000. Radiant-cut diamonds, which have become popular again in recent years, is mixture of a step cut (square or rectangular with long facets) and a round cut. This combination affords a particular kind of radiance.

*Hilary Duff was given a $1 million dollar 14-carat ring from NHL player Mike Comrie. That’s a lot of money for a hockey player!

*Katy Perry got a 5-carat pink-diamond Cartier ring that was specially designed by New Dheli-based jeweler Hanut Singh. Apparently the bond of that ring was not strong enough, as Russel Brand and his new wife split less than a year later. Maybe Brand should have gone the route of:

*Michael Douglas, whose marriage to Catherine Zeta-Jones has lasted a decade and running now, despite a scary bout of cancer for the star of Basic Instinct. Douglas got a 10-carat marquis diamond ring.

*It was elegant and mysterious black diamond for Carmen Electra, when she married rock and roller Rob Patterson.

*Jordan Bratman took the 5-carat diamond and platinum path when he wedded Christina Aguilera in 2005.

*Not all engagement rings feature diamonds. Robert Brinkman, when he married Mena Suvari, gave her a ring made of birthstones, amethysts, and citrines.

*Gavin Rossdale gave Gwen Stefani a diamond-studded, white-gold ring. White-gold, an allow of gold and white metal, is sometimes used as a substitute for platinum in rings.

*Amy Winehouse got a simple solitaire diamond ring for her tempestuous marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil.

I like to think I’m not so much obsessed with celebrity as I am with beautiful stones. Or maybe it’s a combination of both. Either way, it’s fun to sit around and fantasize about the jewelry of the stars.
