Marla Mase is a wanted woman. This multi-hyphenate force has spread her message and music worldwide. Backed by the Tomas Doncker Band, she recently finished her first tour in China where she performed for UN Global Peace Day in Linzhou City, where she was awarded an honorary Messenger of Peace medal for her work as a singer/songwriter.
Her debut album, ‘A Brief Night Out‘, was a true rock opera, chronicling the life of a woman in the midst of an affair and the trials and tribulations that go along with such a journey. It became a one-woman show performed in New York City and further cemented Mase’s status as an artist swimming in a sea of conceptual art.
After being named one of the top 10 bands of 2012, anticipation is mounting for her next release, the deluxe edition of ‘SPEAK‘. The album will include ten songs from her 2010 album as well as six new tracks. One of the new tracks, the standout ‘Piece of Peace‘ doesn’t just ask for peace. Mase almost demands it, back by a throng of a chorus that joins her as the guitar solo comes in as an amen to end on a high note. Is she pleading or demanding peace? These are lyrics that force you to not just hear them, but listen.
‘AnnaRexia‘ is another track with a message, covering pop culture, media mutilation, and tyranny on the television to a reggae beat. The song features vocals from reggae artist Garrison Hawk and the lyrics are an upfront, unapologetic take on the media and its effects on young girls and women.
Marla Mase is no cookie cutter artist and her work is hard to pigeonhole. As an activist for change, through her music, she gives a voice to topics that are usually left on the cutting room floor and proceeds from her album will go to charities. To experience Marla Mase is to experience the human condition – raw, real, and reactant.
