Penelope Cruz is one of the most famous actresses of our time, having starred alongside some heavy hitters throughout the years and becoming a respected actress in her own rite.
And while winning an Oscar for her role in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, she cites her proudest accomplishment and life changing moment when she became a mother to her baby boy Leonardo. We’ve got highlights from the June issue of Vogue where Cruz talks her love for karoake, Johnny Depp, being a mother and more.
ON FIRST MOVING TO LOS ANGELES:
“I came to Los Angeles for the first time in 1994. I only knew how to say two things. One was ‘How are you?’ The other was ‘I want to work with Johnny Depp.’” She adds, “I was very lonely. I would find cats in the street and take them with me. I raised a lot of cats in that period.” Yes, Pene WAS the crazy cat lady.
JOHNNY DEPP, ON PENELOPE CRUZ:
“A lot of things can be said about this creature Penélope Cruz. None of them are bad. She’s the dysfunctional Bacall to my twisted Bogart. She’s the otherworldly Scarlett to my clueless Rhett. She’s the. . . .Well, she’s Ricky to my Lucy.”
ON HER SON AND MOTHERHOOD:
“From the first second, you feel so much love. It is a revolutionary experience. That’s the best way I can describe it. It transforms you completely, in a second. Nature is very wise and gives you nine months to prepare, but in that moment—when you see that face, you are transformed forever. Even if you have heard from all your friends and family, ‘This is what’s going to happen,’ until it happens to you, it’s hard to understand in your soul.”
ON HER PERSONAL LIFE BECOMING PUBLIC:
“I want my son—and my kids if I have more—to grow up in a way that is as anonymous as possible. The fact that his father and I have chosen to do the work that we do doesn’t give anybody the right to invade our privacy.”
ON WHETHER SHE WILL QUIT ACTING FOR FAMILY:
“Of course I will work, because we all need to work. But it’s very important to have time with my family.”
