For those of you who can’t get enough of “Project Runway,” we’ve just heard word that an accessories spin-off is officially in the works.
According to Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood, producer Harvey Weinstein has just sold the rights to “Project Runway: Accessories.” The competition show will more than likely cleave to the “Project Runway” structure, with a panel of judges deciding who goes home each week after designing some overly shiny bauble or a purse with a malfunctioning zipper.
We’re going to hazard the guess that the contestants will have to design more than one kind of accessory — viewers would get bored fast if they had to watch designers cut leather into purses week after week. But what we can’t figure out is who will judge the jewels, shoes and small leather goods the contestants will create. Is there anyone in the world of high-priced bags and boots who can match the on-screen chemistry of Heidi and Michael Kors? (We think not, but Kate Spade, Philip Crangi, Ana Maria Pimentel from Harper’s Bazaar might come close.)
Still, there’s already some concern about the show’s longevity. Each of Weinstein’s other “Project Runway” spinoffs has lasted exactly one season, and the one where Heidi Klum and Seal go around fixing people’s marriages apparently never really got off the ground. But the show’s producers have made a killing from something called the “Project Runway Accessories Design Challenge Sketchbook Set,” so maybe this project has a chance?
The Project Runway juggernaut has slowed since its earlier seasons, but I still remember how captivating the competition can be. Considering how much more difficult it might be to create intricate items like shoes and bags in a short amount of time, I think the concept sounds interesting.
