He couldn’t Cha Cha or Waltz let alone do a crane kick. But this week in spite of having the lowest scores from the judges, Ralph Macchio stayed on Dancing With The Stars.
Ralph and his partner Karina Smirnoff only got about 9 hours of rehearsal time this week due to an injury to Ralph’s knee. The Karate Kid was dealing with a ruptured cyst behind his knee. Normally the couple puts in 40 hours of rehearsal time in a week.
This week the show was down to the final 5 contestants, and each pair performed 2 dances. Show producers also added a new element this week, the instant dance. Contestants are given a song to dance to and they only have 20 minutes to put a dance routine together. Macchio and Smirnoff drew the Cha Cha, and the lack of practice time really showed through.
His prepared dance didn’t go over too well either. This is due in part to the overly creepy stare he had during the Viennese Waltz. Perhaps it was a sign of his determination not to give up.
Overall the two performances this week put Ralph Macchio in last place on the judges’ leaderboard. All 3 judges gave him kudos for dancing with an injury, but the level of his dance was just not the same as the other contestants. The top four spots were very close, with Macchio several points away from making the cut.
But as with most reality competition shows the judge’s opinion doesn’t count for much. Even with the low scores he received, the fans want to see Ralph again next week.
